Migration from seven to eight digits of Telephone Numbers assigned for Mobile Networks on the 1st September 2013

Port-Louis: The migration from seven to eight digits of telephone numbers assigned to mobile networks will be implemented on the 1st September 2013 at 00:00 hrs [local time] as per the latest decision issued by the ICT Authority on the 11 February 2013.

The ICT Authority has issued this decision, in the exercise of its statutory functions under the Information and Communication Technologies Act 2001 as amended pursuant to sections 17(3), 18(1)(f) and 18(1)(q) of the said Act.

The number ‘5’ will be the new leading digit that will have to be added in front of all existing  seven digits numbers listed in the table below as from the 1st September 2013 at 00:00 hrs.

In order to implement this decision, a Telecommunication directive, TD 1 of 2013 has also been released. This Directive provides additional obligations on all public operators and service providers with respect to the migration.

The Authority will soon undertake a comprehensive communication campaign to inform the general public of the changes.

This major development is being implemented after various consultations with mobile operators and different stakeholders such as consumer organisations and representatives of the civil society.

By adopting this migration, the ICT Authority is reforming the numbering space to make room for further innovations in this sector.
